FESTIVAL PROTESTA 2016

After 11 days of events, the closing ceremony of the International Social Films Festival Protesta took place last Saturday in the Atlàntida theatre of Vic, event which included live music performances by Lu Rois, Marga Mbande and Funkystep & The Sey Sisters, a striking monologue performed by actress Txe Arana and a speech corner by the jury members, who gave their different points of view about the theme of this year’s edition: rebel women.

The jury members met before the closing ceremony to share their views and chose the winners. Diary of Hunger, by Mireia Pujol, a drama about migrants at the Melilla border, won best documentary short while the fiction category was awarded to Preferentes, by Nacho Recio, who came all the way from Andalucia, accompanied by producer Romina Mariel to receive the award. The short is about a couple of elderly citizens, victims of the preferential shares fraud, who are forced to leave their home after loosing their money and being unable to pay their mortgage. 25% of the 1000€ of each award is destined to a non-profit organization chosen by the winners. Anna Erra, mayoress of Vic, announced the audience’s choice award of 500€ for Primavera Rosa en el Kremlin, by Mario de la Torre, about the discrimination of the LGBTI collective in Russia. The organization’s special mention went to Zero m2, by Matthieu Landour, which follows a young student facing the complexities of a weird building. The organization valued how the film deals with a very hot issue in a very original way, offering a solution. The jury was composed of Quim Crusellas, audiovisual producer and director of the Asian Summer Nights Festival, Clara Roquet, director and screenwriter, Marc Martínez, actor and theatre director, Natza Farré, screenwriter and journalist, Jordi Borràs, illustrator and photojournalist and Txell Bragulat, director of the Arabian and Mediterranean Cinema of Catalonia.

Almost 2000 people attended the events programmed under this year’s theme for the Festival Protesta, “Rebel Women”, and filled up the 10 venues spread out around the town during the 11 days of duration, amounting to a larger and more diversified audience than in the previous editions. Especially significant was the reopening of the Cine Nou, where 200 people gathered to see the premiere of I, Daniel Blake, the last film by Ken Loach, winner of the Golden Palm in Cannes and the Audience Award in San Sebastian.
